In thinking about Africa’s development, two things come to mind. One is a statistic that never ceases to amaze me. It is the fact that approximately 70% of Africa is under the age of 30. Further, about one-fifth of Africans are between 15-24 years of age. This is staggering to me – basically everyone is young! Of course, the reasons for this population imbalance are manifold, but atop that list is the high birthrate. In Mali, the fertility rate is 6.3 children per woman. Given these facts, youth empowerment shouldn’t just be a political buzzword. It should be a real priority in the development agenda.

Africa as a whole was the only region in the world whose tourism grew continuously at a double rate of growth over the last 10 years. The continent’s 50 million tourists are predicted to almost triple to 140 million by 2030. No sub-Saharan African country – where growth has been the most intense – wants to be left out of this influx of foreign cash.

French-based Havas Media International and South African media group Carat, a unit of Aegis Media, are also angling for a piece of the action in a sector fuelled by a fast-growing middle class in Kenya, east Africa’s largest economy.
